The Challenge of Teaching English
English is not my specialist area as a secondary teacher. Instead, I have spent decades honing the skills of drama teaching and the embodied way performance skills are realised from Foundation-aged children right through to writing textbooks and examining Year 12s.
Now, I’m in a different mindset and asking how all the lessons I’ve learned about creative and analytical tasks in the performing arts might be applied to learning literacy and thinking skills. The transformation began twenty years ago at the Biscuit Factory Arts Centre on South Tce in South Fremantle. But a few things got in the way of a smooth transition from then to now. However, I am happy to be working in a school again today. Let’s see if I can do some good.
Year 7 English
In Semester 1 I will be teaching three units – Writing persuasive texts, Writing information texts and responding to and writing about the novel, Tim Winton’s Blueback.
Year 8 English
I’m planning to teach two units in Semester 1. The first unit is based on writing persuasive texts and the second unit another novel studies, Andy Mulligan’s Trash.
